What you need to do / tips
Organization is key!
Before shipping your photos, you’ll want to organize them. This is best done by year or decade, but can be organized by event, holiday, or place. Just organize or categorize them in the way that makes the most sense to you. Simple organization is best for finding photos to share with family. When you receive the digital images, they’ll be in folders matching your choice.
For instance, if you choose to organize by year, the files will be in a folders like this:
- 1970’s
- 1971
- 1972
- 1973
- …
Organizing by decade would like like this:
- 1950’s
- 1960’s
- 1970’s
- …
When organizing, you can leave them in the original developer’s envelopes and label them with permanent marker, or you can put them into ziplock bags with the the labeling on the outside of the bag in permanent marker. Please avoid using stickers or sticky notes as they can fall off in shipping or unpacking.
Your original photographs will be returned in your original packaging.
When you are ready to start organizing, feel free to contact us, we can walk you through strategies to best accommodate your circumstances.
Please note, when removing photos from albums, your priority should be to preserve the photos, not necessarily the album. Many times, album pages bend, the adhesive comes off, the plastic covers fall apart, or pages fall out of the album. In your case, because you are focused on the photographs, all diligence should be given to preserving the photographs themselves.
If the photo albums are really old, the photos may have “glued” themselves to the page, and removing them will likely result in damage. In that case, contact us. We can arrange a special project for those albums where we’ll scan the entire page, and separate the individual images for you. It’s a lengthier process, but very much worth saving your family history.
This is important: You will be charged by the photograph. To help reduce your total cost, remove duplicate prints before you pack them for shipping.
